Benefits Of Electrolytes And Vitamin C For The Human Body

What’s an electrolyte?

An electrolyte is a substance that conducts electricity when dissolved in water. They are essential for a number of bodily functions. All humans need electrolytes to survive. Many automatic processes in the body rely on a small electric current to function, and electrolytes provide this charge.

Importance of electrolytes:

What makes electrolytes important is that they control how and where fluids are dispersed throughout your body. They maintain the balance of fluids inside and outside of each your cells. This balance ensures proper function of your hydration level, muscular function, pH level, nerve impulses, balance blood acidity and pressure, and help rebuild damaged tissue. The muscles and neurons rely on the movement of electrolytes through the fluid inside, outside, or between cells.

The most important electrolytes required by the human body are sodium, potassium, magnesium, calcium, chloride and phosphate. Each electrolyte has certain specific functions

  1. Sodium is the dominant positive ion which regulates body’s water content and also aids nerve communication.

  1. Calcium is responsible for building and maintaining strong bones, also plays a vital role in muscle and nerve functions, especially muscle contraction and nerve impulse transmission i.e. transport of signals up and down the nerves which in turn directs the muscles to act.

  1. Chloride along with sodium helps control body’s water content.

  1. Potassium is needed to maintain normal functions of cells and muscles.

  1. Magnesium helps convert blood sugar into energy, also supports over 300 enzyme reactions.

  1. Phosphate facilitates absorption of calcium in bones as well as regulates the blood pH level.

Keeping a balanced nutritious diet will supply most persons with enough electrolytes to live a healthy life. If you are an athlete or consider yourself a ‘high-activity’ person, it is important to be conscious of your electrolyte levels in order to continue being the healthiest you that you can be.

Vitamin C and its importance:

Vitamin C is an essential vitamin, meaning your body can’t produce it. Yet, it has many roles and has been linked to impressive health benefits. Vitamin C is a water-soluble vitamin that must be obtained from the diet or supplements. It has been linked to many impressive health benefits, such as boosting antioxidant levels, lowering blood pressure, protecting against gout attacks, improving iron absorption, boosting immunity, and reducing heart disease and dementia risk.

Overall, Vitamin C supplements are a great and simple way to boost your vitamin C intake if you struggle to get enough from your diet.
